The Ammonia, Plasma (Heparin) test measures the level of ammonia in your blood, an important indicator of liver and metabolic function. Elevated ammonia levels can indicate liver disease, metabolic disorders, or certain conditions affecting the body’s ability to process nitrogen. Common reasons for testing include: Evaluating liver function and detecting liver disease (such as cirrhosis or hepatitis) Monitoring patients with suspected metabolic or genetic disorders Assessing unexplained neurological symptoms (confusion, fatigue, or lethargy) Checking patients at risk for hyperammonemia Specimen Type: Blood draw (plasma, collected in heparin tube) Turnaround Time: Typically 1–3 business days Collection Available: In-office or mobile blood draw services
