The C. difficile Toxin A/B Gene PCR test detects the presence of Clostridioides difficile (C. diff) bacteria and its toxin-producing genes using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technology. This infection can cause diarrhea, colitis, and other gastrointestinal symptoms, often following antibiotic use. Why it’s done: To diagnose C. difficile infection in patients with diarrhea To confirm the presence of toxin-producing C. difficile bacteria To guide appropriate treatment and infection control To monitor recurrence or response to therapy Specimen Type: Stool sample Turnaround Time: Typically 1–3 business days Collection Available: In-office (stool collection required)
