The Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) Culture is a swab test used to detect the presence of an active herpes infection from an open sore or lesion. Why it’s done: To confirm an active HSV-1 or HSV-2 infection To evaluate new or painful oral or genital sores To differentiate herpes from other skin or vaginal infections To guide treatment decisions during an active outbreak Specimen Type: Swab from lesion or sore Turnaround Time: Typically 2–4 business days Collection Available: In-office or mobile specimen collection
