The Heterophile Screen (also known as the Monospot test) is a rapid blood test used to detect antibodies associated with infectious mononucleosis, commonly caused by the Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV). Why it’s done: To help diagnose mono in patients with symptoms such as fatigue, sore throat, fever, and swollen lymph nodes To differentiate mono from other viral or bacterial infections To support evaluation of prolonged fatigue or illness Specimen Type: Blood draw Turnaround Time: Typically Same day – 1 business day Collection Available: In-office or mobile blood draw services
