The Methylmalonic Acid (MMA) test measures the level of MMA in the blood or urine using liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC-MS). Elevated levels can indicate a vitamin B12 deficiency or certain metabolic disorders. Why it’s done: To diagnose vitamin B12 deficiency, especially when B12 levels are borderline To evaluate metabolic disorders affecting methylmalonate metabolism To monitor patients on B12 supplementation or treatment To investigate symptoms such as fatigue, neuropathy, or anemia Specimen Type: Blood draw or urine Turnaround Time: Typically 3–5 business days Collection Available: In-office or mobile blood draw services
