The Sedimentation Rate (ESR) test measures how quickly red blood cells settle at the bottom of a test tube over a specified period. It is a nonspecific marker of inflammation in the body. Why it’s done: To detect inflammation associated with conditions such as autoimmune disorders, infections, or chronic diseases To monitor disease activity and response to treatment in inflammatory conditions To help diagnose conditions like temporal arteritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or systemic lupus erythematosus To investigate unexplained symptoms such as fatigue, fever, or joint pain To support evaluation of systemic inflammatory processes Specimen Type: Blood draw Turnaround Time: Typically 1–2 business days Collection Available: In-office or mobile blood draw services
