The Sputum Culture / Gram Stain test identifies bacteria or fungi in a patient’s sputum and helps determine the most effective treatment for respiratory infections. Why it’s done: To diagnose bacterial, fungal, or mixed respiratory infections To guide appropriate antibiotic or antifungal therapy To evaluate patients with persistent cough, fever, or lung disease To monitor response to treatment for respiratory infections To help detect infections in high-risk populations, including immunocompromised patients Specimen Type: Sputum (coughed-up mucus) Turnaround Time: Typically 2–5 business days Collection Available: In-office or mobile collection services
